SERIOUS SCIENCE for the SERIOUS DOG OWNER

Digestive System • Digestive Enzymes and Probiotics

Digestive Enzymes and Probiotics prebioticsDoes your dog always seem hungry? Does your dog eat a lot but has problems putting on good weight? Does your dog eat dry or canned dog food? Does your dog eat grass? If you answered yes to any of these four questions than the odds are your dog needs Retrieveā„¢ Digestive Enzymes & Probiotics.

Retrieveā„¢ Digestive Enzymes & Probiotics is a concentrated enzyme blend from fresh vegetablesources that contain live, viable, naturally occurring, micro-organisms to help support a healthy digestive system.

Nearly all of the live, vital, bacteria needed for your dog's proper digestion are killed during the manufacturing process of most all dog foods. High heat is used during, and still more heat is caused during the extrusion process resulting in the death and damage to enzymes and bacteria.

Digestive Enzymes and Probiotics restores these live/vital bacteria greatly enhancing theabsorption of nutrients and restoring  metabolic function by promoting the highest enzyme activity levels. This is accomplished by alpha-Amylase for starch hydroxylation, protease for protein hydroxylation, lipase for hydroxylation of triglycerides and cellulose for rapid cellulose break down. Also ideal for support in changing diets, after de-worming, and other stress related events. Gets your dog's system working the way it was designed to work.

Other Information:

Probiotics are living bacteria found in the mouth, esophagus, stomach, gut, intestines, colon, and vaginal tract of mammals.  More than 400 bacterial species are found in the human digestive tract alone. Probiotics prevent the colonization of micro-organisms like pathogens. It is also linked to an increased resistance to infectious diseases, particularly of the intestine, decreased duration of diarrhea, reduction in blood pressure, reduction in serum cholesterol concentration, reduction in allergy, stimulation of phagocytosis by peripheral blood leucocytes, modulation of cytokine gene expression, adjuvant effect, regression of tumours, and reduction in carcinogen or co-carcinogen production.

Your Dog has Food Allergies? Read This.

By Tim Fisher, CEO / Founder RETRIEVE HEALTH™

“There seems to be an epidemic of dogs diagnosed with so called “food allergies”. But is it actually food allergies or is it simply an issue of your dogs inability to digest the food it is being fed? The following article may help eliminate your dog’s symptoms diagnosed as food allergies.”

Digestive Enzymes
There are four main categories of digestive enzymes: amylase, protease, cellulase and lipase. Amylase breaks down carbohydrates, protease helps digest protein, cellulase breaks down fiber and lipase aids in the digestion of fats. These digestive enzymes are naturally produced by your dog but not in nearly the quantity needed to digest most of today’s commercial dog foods which contain even higher amounts of protein, fats and fiber. It is my opinion that the “race” to see who can add the most protein, fat and fiber to commercial dog food may actually be a cause of what is being diagnosed as food allergies. Your dog needs enzymes and bacteria to digest food and in the past some of these enzymes could be found in the food itself. Unfortunately, many natural enzymes and bacteria found in today’s dog food ingredients are killed during the manufacturing process. Without these necessary elements, the nutrients needed to keep your dog’s skin, organs and coat healthy may be missing, once again adding to the symptoms diagnosed as food allergies.

The Role of Digestive Enzymes Digestive enzymes and an assortment of beneficial bacteria and yeast (probiotics) are needed to break down and transport food nutrients in the body. Killed at temperatures above 118° to 170°, live/viable digestive enzymes are not available in commercial dog foods. Enzymes are catalysts, which mean they cause an internal action without themselves being destroyed or changed in the process. Each enzyme acts on a specific food and one cannot be substituted for another. In the absence of these nutritional workhorses, the dog’s ability to utilize the food it receives is greatly diminished. Food enzymes also do a portion of the job of pre-digestion, leaving our dog’s body a sufficient supply of metabolic enzymes to draw on for maintaining and strengthening the many other bodily systems. As a result, the immune system, digestive system, hormonal glands and organs are in their optimum working order. Digestive enzymes are secreted along the gastrointestinal tract and break down foods, enabling the nutrients to be absorbed into the bloodstream for use in various bodily functions. There seems to be a finite reservoir of enzymes in the body. If various organs and glands are continually robbed of their own enzymes, which must be utilized to digest food, then eventually the body breaks down. A good enzyme supplement maximizes the nutritional value of any diet by optimizing digestion and the absorption of nutrients. The more enzymes we provide, the more digestive will occur. Retrieve Health™ provides a product with live/active digestive enzymes and probiotics. By simply top feeding this natural product over your dog’s food it may eliminate the symptoms diagnosed as food allergies. Taking enzyme supplements helps prevent depletion of the body’s own enzymes and thus reduces the stress on the dog’s body. Your dog’s overall health and quality of life will be increased. As an added bonus these enzymes also work together with the coenzymes vitamins and minerals greatly increasing vitamin and mineral utilization and assist in proper metabolic function. The goal of this article is to simplify what goes on in the digestive system. I will divide digestion into two parts “Upstream” and “Downstream”.

Upstream
Digestive Enzymes of the Oral Cavity: The salivary glands in the oral cavity contain two main digestive enzymes that start the food breakdown as soon as it is in the dog’s mouth. This digestive enzyme helps to break down the starch into smaller segments of soluble sugars, which can then be utilized by the body. Digestive Enzymes of the Stomach: The digestive enzymes that are secreted in the stomach are generally referred to as ‘gastric enzymes’ which breakdown proteins, starch and fats. Digestive Enzymes of the Pancreas: Pancreas is a gland organ that secretes many digestive enzymes and is a part of the digestive system of vertebrates. It releases four main categories of digestive enzymes: amylase, protease, cellulase and lipase. Amylase breaks down carbohydrates, protease helps digest protein, cellulase breaks down fiber and lipase aids in the digestion of fats. Digestive Enzymes of the Small Intestine: The enzymes included are sucrase, which splits the sucrose into glucose and fructose, maltase that splits maltose into glucose.

Downstream:
Downstream in the colon is where certain bacteria, also known as probiotics are used to do the final breakdown of fats, proteins, fiber, and carbohydrates.

The Probiotics Buzz

Articles are buzzing within formation pertaining for the need of probiotics to aid your dog’s digestion. This is true, but as you can see, probiotics are essential for “downstream” digestion. So, how do we help the upstream digestion? Simply stated, if upstream digestive is missing essential digestive enzymes then the feed-stuff entering the downstream colon will not be properly broken down. The results are fecal matter full of unused nutrients and your expensive dog food is pooped out the backend.
